Without thinking he tilted her chin back up, his hand moving back to her cheek, sliding into her hair and pulling her close. Adam had said to do what made her happy, and while he wasn't sure that he could technically consider this a "good guy" move, he reassured himself that a gay fiance was really no fiance at all. And one who had probably already been cheating on her was even worse. He hadn't planned on kissing her tonight - he hadn't really planned on kissing her ever, now that she was engaged, but his entire body seemed to let go on tension he didn't realize he had been holding. He would have been lying if he said he hadn't thought about what this would have been like. It was, he admitted, better than he was expecting.
Slowly pulling away from her he muttered, "I'm sorry. For all of it." He sighed softly, looking down at her lips for a moment, wondering if kissing her again would be pushing his luck. "I'm sorry for everything that you're going through."
He wanted to add that the one thing he wasn't sorry for was kissing her.

When he pulled her closer and kissed him back, she felt something akin to relief wash over her. Not just that he hadn't rejected her, but because she'd spent the last four months thinking that that might never happen again - being kissed by someone that truly wanted to kiss her. She shook her head at his apologies, hand finding the side of his face and forehead leaning against his. "Shhhh," she urged. "You don't have anything to apologize for, Adam." Almost unable to stop herself, she leaned in once more to press her lips against his. This time it was a bit slower, a bit deeper. She thought to herself that if this was the first and last night this were able to happen, she wanted to remember it because she'd waited for it for long enough.
Taking a breath when she pulled away, she looked up at him, chewing on her lip and hesitating slightly before posing her question. "Do you want to maybe share a cab with me?"

Adam looked at her for a minute, trying to decide how much he wanted to push his luck already with this situation. When it came down to it, he figured that he hadn't done anything technically wrong. There were dozens of ways he could justify kissing her, wanting to do it again, and even taking her back to his place. How much of a relationship would he really have been getting in the middle of, anyway?
He was acutely aware of the fact that she still wore Garrett's ring on her finger. A ring that had been given to her by someone that Adam had known well enough during law school that regardless of whether or not Garrett deserved to her, it wasn't an easy decision for him to make. Ultimately it came down to what he wanted to do - and right now he was having the hardest time convincing himself that he should leave.
"Sure," he said, smiling softly at her. He payed for their drinks and polished off what was left in his glass before standing and offering his hand to her. "Ready?"

Riley knew that it was wrong, to a degree. She was still engaged and, if only for the sake of the campaign, she shouldn't really be leaving a bar with anyone. She thought about what she'd told her family and friends about Garrett when she'd gotten engaged to him, about how she knew that he was a good man and how while everything had happened quickly and unexpectedly, but she liked him quite a bit. She almost thought it was ironic that she honestly felt that way a bit more about the man beside her now than her current fiance. She should have just gone home - told Adam goodnight and gone home alone. She should, but something else in the back of her mind was willing her to be a bit more selfish on this particular night.
Smiling at him, she finished her drink quickly, shuddering for a quick moment when it burned its way down her throat before she took his hand and walked out of the bar onto the sidewalk to hail a cab.
