Parker briefly thought of his own parents. His father's declining health and his mother's weariness in the face of it all. As a boy, he'd almost feared his father and that had changed into rebellion in his teenage years, he wasn't quite sure where he stood with them now but he was certainly trying to be a better son.
Taking a sip of his wine, he listened to Madison and shook his head. "You make me nervous, Madison," he chuckled, leaning in. "I don't know anyone else quite like you and I think that when I knew you ten years ago, I didn't appreciate that as much as I should. And I don't quite know that I deserve your second chance, but I'm damn well pleased to take it. But you shouldn't be all that nervous, or if it's any consolation, we can be nervous together."

"I'll take it," she agreed with a small nod. "We can we nervous together and I can continue to be awkward because you say such sweet things and I have no idea how to respond to them." She leaned over the table, moving herself closer to him. "And I don't know that I would call it a second chance. From what I remember it doesn't really seem like we had that much of a first chance."
There had been significant obstacles in the way the last time she remembered going out with him, and she hoped to keep those obstacles at bay this time around. "Did you ever think that we'd be back here like this?"
She wasn't sure that she could believe it. It had taken her a while to move on and to get past what she considered to have been her first relationship, but she had. It had only taken seeing him at the reunion for all of that time to unravel and leave her in a state of confusion - and curiosity. She was glad that it had driven her to participating in a conversation with him then, because as she had realized the other night with Riley - maybe there was a chance that he could make her happy. They seemed to be off to a good start.

Parker looked at Madison and smiled, "I'm not very good at being nervous. Not used to it," he admitted. When she asked if he ever thought they'd be there like this, he shook his head. "Honestly, I really didn't. When I left New York for college, I didn't really intend on coming back. Not really, I shut the door on everyone back here." He smiled, "But then I came back and I'll admit that it was nice to find that you were here again too."
He took another sip of his wine and smiled at her. "So, Madison Walker, lover of great and epic stories, what do you think happens next in ours?"

She laughed, "I don't know."
Thinking of their own story, as he referred to it, as great and epic kept bringing a smile to her face. While it wasn't on par with the likes of The Odyssey or Lord of the Rings, she liked to think that some day she might have something really great to tell someone about how they met. She stopped her train of thought suddenly - that was a very bad, and very stupid path to trail down, she reminded herself.
So instead she tried to think of what else she had hoped to get from asking him out tonight. It was probably a combination of things, she concluded. She wanted to convince herself that she had taken Riley's advice and used it in a way that had made it easier for her to know what she wanted. What she wanted right now was being driven by a mess of thoughts she couldn't keep at bay. She wanted him to admit that he wanted to be with her in simplistic terms, to know that there would be more dates past tonight; dates she didn't have to initiate. She wanted to laugh with him and feel a kiss pressed against her lips, finally feeling this insane tension relax. But mostly - right now she wanted to stop jumping to conclusions of what she hoped would happen and just let the night continue to organically unfold. Well, maybe it could use a little prodding.
She reached across the table and took his hand like she had the last time they had been out together. "But I'm excited to find out."

Parker smiled at her, taking her hand when she reached for his and squeezing her hand lightly. In the back of his mind, a voice still shouted at him that this was a horrible idea. That someone was going to get hurt and it was most likely Madison. That there were a thousand and one reasons he should walk away and leave her so that she could find something better. But he was a selfish cad. So instead he just flashed her a charming grin.
"I daresay I'm quite excited too. I always did like a good adventure story," he nodded, remembering briefly that he'd just stated his favorite book had been about a man doomed by his own deal with the devil and pushing the thought away. "I think you're going to like this place, the food's very good."
