"I don't want to make you get used to something that you're not sure of," he told her sadly. Adam absolutely hated when they fought, and unfortunately, he had been in a few too many fights with her recently. Between feeling useless over having her mother back in town and now this, he wasn't sure what to think about everything, and as much as he didn't want to admit it, he was questioning whether or not they had moved too quickly in their relationship. Maybe they should have taken the time to sort out all of this before they were getting ready to walk down the aisle and start their lives as husband and wife. "Riley, I love you. I just don't want you to feel like you're settling to be something or someone that you don't want to be."
And even though she had said that she could get used to it, he felt like he was being selfish asking her to. "We can figure something out," he offered, hoping that there was a possibility of a compromise.

Riley looked at him and nodded. "Yeah," she agreed. "We'll figure something out. I don't feel like i'm settling. It's an adjustment, that's all," she assured him. She chewed on her lip. "I love you, okay? I've loved you for so long and I...We'll figure it out." She wrapped her arms around him and took a deep breath. "I'm sorry," she muttered against him.

He relaxed when he felt her arms wrap around him. Adam responded by wrapping his arms around her, pressing a kiss to the top of her head. "I love you too, and I don't like us arguing or having disagreements. I just want us to talk about this like this, okay? Just open it up for conversation. I suggested that we pay for your family to come down for the wedding, you said it was a bad idea, so now we're just kind of open for more brainstorming."

Riley nodded against him, holding herself close to him and taking a breath. "Yeah. We can brainstorm. We're both two incredibly smart people. Maybe if we give it a bit and talk to him, it'll be okay." Looking up at him, she pushed up on her toes to kiss him quickly. "I don't want to fight. I really don't," she told him sadly. But the truth was that they'd been having little fights about things like money for a while now and she didn't know when it was really going to get better. The prospect of it scared her a bit, actually.

If he would have known what to do to ensure that they would stop fighting over the same things again and again, he would have done it in a heartbeat. It was emotionally exhausting to go through it and he never felt like they ever really solved their problems, it seemed very much like they hit the pause button on it instead. Adam just hoped that it wouldn't get worse over time. "I'm sure everything will work out," he said, suddenly aware of the fact that for the first time since he proposed, he wasn't sure if it was all going to work out. He wanted to be the husband who could bring his wife home flowers just because, take her out to a nice dinner because he thought they deserved it, went away on expensive vacations because they needed to unwind, but he didn't want to feel like he was dragging her into something she didn't want to be part of. The thing that he couldn't wrap his mind around was the fact that with her new job, it wasn't like she wasn't doing quite well for herself either. All things considered, they should have been more than comfortable, and he had thought that she would have been relieved, or at least happy about it.
