Cooper really thought it might have been the easiest decision in the world. After several weeks of back and forth with his ex-wife, he had surprisingly been able to come to an understanding thanks to his daughter who'd looked Simone straight in the eye and said she wanted to stay with him. It seemed to become clear just why things hadn't worked out with the two of them, all of the things he had overlooked about her when he'd been younger and thought he should be settling down with a family.
It put things about his relationship with Madison in perspective too. The short time that he'd known her was still different from his young and somewhat naive relationship with his ex. The way he felt about Maddy made his first real relationship seem like child's play. He loved Maddy, loved spending time with her, loved how much Melanie loved her. And he felt like he was at the point in his life where there was no point in putting off something when he knew what he wanted.
So when he approached her brownstone, small black jewelry box in his pocket, to pick her up for New Years Eve, he had decided that there was no point in putting off what he thought was pretty inevitable. It was only when he knocked on the door that he started to feel a bit nervous. However, when she let him in and smiled at him, those nerves seemed to calm a bit. "Hey, beautiful. Happy New Year."

Madison hadn't been sure what was going to happen with Cooper's ex-wife, the entire situation had seemed well beyond her understanding. After feeling as though she was intruding on something much bigger than herself, she had decided to just try and be there for both Cooper and Melanie in whatever way that she could. It hadn't been the easiest, she had to admit, but when everything had finally been resolved, she found herself relieved that she had stuck it out. She hadn't thought that she could ever be so ridiculously in love with someone, but that was the only way that she thought that she could describe how she felt about him. Every date, every night spent watching some sort of children's movie with he and Melanie, and every moment that they had an opportunity to spend time alone together, she found herself more and more in love.
When he knocked on the door, she had to stop herself from nearly running to open it. Wondering idly if she was ever going to stop feeling like such a teenage girl around him, she grinned brightly at him, opening the door to greet him. "Hi," she leaned up to kiss him quickly, "Happy New Year."

He smiled down at her, placing his hands on her waist and kissing her as he stepped inside. "So, I've got some good news," he told her. "Simone's going back to Texas, and she's not going to keep up this fight for Melanie," he nodded. "We talked some and I told her that as Melanie gets older if she wants to spend more time with her here and there, we could talk about it - but Melanie told her that she wants to stay with me and I think she got it, you know?" he smiled, it was a weight off of his shoulders, for sure. "So, I think that's a pretty good start for the New Year,"
He had to admit, it was a load off of his mind that had allowed him to focus on what was truly important to him. Though he'd been lying if he'd said he didn't have an idea on what he wanted his life with Maddy to be like for a while now. "The entire thing, this whole mess - I really appreciate you being patient with me while I figured it out. And while it was the last thing I wanted to deal with, it put some stuff in perspective for me, you know?"

Maddy smiled at him, "That's wonderful news." The truth was she felt incredibly relieved by the fact that the situation had been resolved, for his sake. She knew how hard it had been for him, and how much the thought of losing Melanie had affected him, so she had to agree, it certainly was a good start to the New Year. And while it had been a strenuous and exhausting situation for everyone who was involved, she was glad that they had gotten an opportunity to discuss it early on. Without the encouragement that he had provided, she wasn't sure that she would have been able to be as patient as she had been, but ultimately it had all turned out for the best in the end.
Nodding, she continued to smile at him. "It's not a problem. I completely understand how hard it must have been for you."

Cooper felt his nerves rising to the surface again, but he batted them away. Reaching for Madison's hand, he nodded at her. "Yeah, and it would have been even harder if I didn't have you around, Maddy," he assured her. "And I realize how important it is, you know, to surround myself with the people I care about, even when things get hard. And there's not a single person I could think of that I want to have by my side going forward. I love you a lot - I love spending time with you, I love how much my daughter loves you." He leaned in and pressed a quick kiss to her lips before reaching with one hand into the inside breast pocket of his jacket, pulling out the box he had placed there. He offered her a grin, before deciding that he should do this the right way - whole nine yards - and he got down onto one knee. "Madison," he started, opening the box to reveal the ring. "Would you marry me?"

She could feel her grin growing wider and wider as he continued, her heartbeat quickening as she began to suspect that something was going on. She would have been lying if she said that she hadn't thought about this moment, if she hadn't thought what it would be like to marry Cooper. There were still aspects of the idea that caused her to feel anxious and nervous, the idea of being a step-mother to Melanie for example, but more than anything she felt excited and just simply happy.
She suggested him up from his position on one knee, broad grin on her face at this point. "I love you, so much." She hesitated only briefly before continuing. "Yes. Yes, I will absolutely marry you." She kissed him forcefully, nearly throwing herself at him.

Cooper smiled broadly, arms winding around her waist when she kissed him, pulling her close against him. He chuckled softly against her lips, pulling away for long enough to slip the ring onto her finger. He grinned down at her, "Thought this was a great way to start off the New Year," he quipped, bending down to kiss her. "Because my resolution is to keep you for good, Madison," he nodded. Smiling brightly at her. In the back of his head, he thought that he should have planned this a bit better - regretting that they had a party to get to rather than staying home to celebrate privately for a bit, but still, he knew it would be exciting to share the news with their friends.
Placing his hands gently on the side of her face, he kissed her gently and looked down at her. "Stuck with me now, Maddy," he winked.

There were a lot of things that Madison tries not to be overly girly about. Fashion was one thing. While she loved shopping and tried to keep up on some trends, practicality always seemed to win out in the end. It was hard to justify a loud, brightly colored sheath dress when she knew the classic little black dress would get a lot more use. But one thing that she had always known she was going to be overly girly about was her engagement ring. When Cooper slipped it on her hand she couldn't help but stop and gape at it for a moment. It was beautiful, and so so sparkly. It was absolutely perfect.
She kissed him again, finding it had actually become difficult to stop. "I'm glad to be stuck with you," she admitted with a grin. "I love you." She couldn't seem to stop telling him that either.

Cooper chuckled and nodded at her, "I love you, too," he promised her. "So much." He pressed his mouth against hers, pulling her flush against him as his fingertips tangled gently in the ends of her hair. He pulled away after a moment and smirked down at her, leaning his forehead against hers. "As much as I want to stay and celebrate, I think that we should probably get going so I can show off my fiancee," he grinned down at her, liking the way the new title slipped off of his tongue so easily.

It was very surreal to hear him say it out loud, but being referred to as his fiancee still caused a wide grin to form. Madison was stuck between a rock and a hard place at the mention of getting to the party because as much as she also would have loved to stay home with him and celebrate, she was also ridiculously excited to share the news with their friends. "Okay," she agreed. "But later well have to really celebrate."
