Riley Tyler sat in the bedroom she shared with her husband, who she knew would be home from work soon. She hadn’t attempted to make dinner yet despite having gotten home hours earlier. The redhead had taken half a day at work to make time for a doctor’s appointment – one that she was very excited for.
Not long after her honeymoon, Riley had gone to her doctor to let her know that she and Adam were interested in starting a family right away and she wanted a routine check up and to see if there was any professional medical advice for someone trying to conceive. Her doctor had given her some advice – that she and Adam were both more than willing to follow, and also taken some tests.
Today, she’d been informed that, based on the test results, she might have trouble getting pregnant.
Riley felt crushed. She had been so excited to start her life with Adam and they’d both wanted to start a family together as soon as possible. Before Riley ever dreamed of being president, she’d dreamed of being a mother. Now the idea that it might not even be possible was so upsetting.
She heard the door to the apartment open, signaling that Adam was home and sighed, slumping down on the bed and wishing she could wake up from what felt like a bad dream.

Adam had hoped that after their honeymoon he and Riley would have gotten the news they had been hoping for, that they were going to be parents, but, unfortunately, their timing seemed off. And while he had no complaints about the activities of their honeymoon, he couldn't help but admit that he was a little disappointed. Even now, after the advice that they just continue trying, it seemed like they just hadn't been able to find their good luck yet. And while he wasn't necessarily in a hurry to stop trying, he had to admit that there was a certain allure to the idea that they could have been parents. Part of him thought that if Brandon and Amber could be parents, even accidentally, then it should have been easy for them to have become parents as well.
Stepping inside of the apartment, he was a little disappointed to see that Riley wasn't making dinner, as had become their new married routine. He wondered for a brief second if she just hadn't gotten home yet before he remembered that she had been planning on checking in with the doctor again today. Walking into their bedroom, he smiled to see her on the bed before he realized that she seemed upset. "Hi sweetheart, how was your day?"

Riley looked up at Adam before frowning and glancing away, she shrugged her shoulders up. She fidgeted slightly, staring at her hands for a moment before speaking. "I went to see my doctor today," she said softly. "Before the wedding even, I knew we wanted to start trying to have a family right away and so I wanted to just - as a formality - make sure that everything was okay, maybe figure out the best times to be trying, you know? Just get a handle on what to expect. So my doctor ran some tests," she sniffled a bit. "And while it's not impossible..." she trailed off and tried to take a deep breath. "It's...they said a lot of things and I went to law school, not med school - but none of it sounded very promising."
Riley hated the fact of the matter even more now that she was saying it out loud. She blinked back tears and didn't look up at him, knowing that if she did she might lose it. "I'm sorry, Adam," she muttered gently. "I know that starting a family is something that you wanted and now I don't know...I don't know if I can give that to you."

It broke his heart to see her so upset about this, and while he could feel his own disappointment over her announcement, he still couldn't stop feeling as though he just wanted to hold her and comfort her. He sat down beside her on their bed and wrapped an arm around her, pressing a kiss to her temple. "It's okay," he reassured her though he wasn't sure that he really believed himself. It wasn't just disappointment, he realized, it was a little heartbreaking to think that they may never have been able to be parents. It took a moment for him to shake himself of that thought knowing that they still had a lot of options.
"There are still ways," he told her, taking her hand in his. "We could adopt. Or there's in vitro fertilization. Surrogacy... a lot of things." He gave her a small smile, hoping that she realized that none of this was her fault, sometimes it just took a little bit more time or more money, both things that he was willing to give to her for this. "If it's something that we still want to do, we have a lot of options to make it happen."

Riley frowned, leaning her head on Adam's shoulder as she sniffled and squeezed his hand. "I just..." she frowned and looked down. She was so disappointed, even though she knew that they had options, she had just wanted it to go easy for them. She'd been so excited for them to start a family and now this setback - however temporary it was - hurt her. She also felt as though Adam deserved better. She knew that adoption and surrogacy were completely reasonable options - and she knew that there was something great about giving a home to a baby that needed one - but she'd wanted to have her own kids. "I wanted to get pregnant," she said softly.
She shifted closer to him, wiping at her eyes and frowning. "I was so excited, I thought that if I went to the doctor's, I'd be able to come home and give you good news," she said gently.

He held her more closely to his body, tangling his fingers in the ends of her hair. If he could have made all of the pain she was feeling go away in that moment, he would have. It hurt him to see her so distraught, and Adam knew that he would have done anything for her to give her exactly what she wanted. But it wasn't that easy, and that tore him apart more than the news that it was going to be more difficult for them to start a family than they would have liked. It wasn't even that he was upset with her, or that he was disappointed as much as he had right to be, it was just that he wanted his wife to be happy.
Turning to press a kiss to the top of her head, he nodded. There was something about the thought of her being pregnant, of carrying their child, that he knew that he wanted to. So there was really only one solution, one that he was willing to throw as much time, money, and resources at in the hopes of it giving them both what they wanted - they needed to try in vitro fertilization. "Then let's make an appointment with a fertility specialist or whomever and find out what we need to do next. I don't know a lot about in vitro, but I know that it works for a lot of people."

Riley nodded at Adam, wrapping her arms around him tightly. She knew that any option they had was bound to be expensive and time consuming and she was now worried about getting her hopes up. While normally, Riley was reluctant to throw money at a problem, she was even a bit surprised with how agreeable of an idea she thought it was when it came to starting their family together. She leaned up and pressed a soft kiss to his lips, looking away.
She tried to shake off the guilt she'd been feeling since her doctor's appointment earlier that day, but it was no use. Where she and Adam had differed in planning their wedding and the typical spats couples found themselves in a long the way, they had agreed on wanting to start a family right away. It seemed incredibly unfair to her that they might not be able to because of her. She thought, sadly, that maybe Adam deserved better after all. "I don't really feel like cooking, maybe we can order take out," she said gently, leaning her head on his shoulder.
