Melanie Benson tended to exude confidence almost everywhere she went. She'd learned early on that believing that she was the best was the way to convince others that she was. Prior to her relationship with Tripp, she'd used that mentality to get what she wanted from the men she had fleeting flings with, she used it with her friends to assume a position of power, and she used it with her enemies to ensure that she always got her way and came out on top. But in all of her years, there was only one person that had the ability to make her doubt herself - that made her feel less than worthy of attention, happiness, and whatever else it was she may have wanted.
Her mother.
Traveling down to Austin in January on what she affectionately referred to as her yearly pilgrimage to hell, she'd packed her carry-on bag for her brief stay and found herself in her mother's home for the weekend.
Her half-sisters, Libby and Chelsea, were not too fond of her. They were average looking, vapid girls that tended to wear too much make up and were far too spoiled. Libby, who was eighteen, had recently begun dating an older man who, much to Melanie's dismay, had been a summer fling during one of her longer stays in Austin as a teenager. She'd hardly remembered him upon sitting down across the table from him at dinner but it seemed she'd made quite the impression on him.
That summer, she recalled, had been nothing more than making out and some light, above the belt touching, but when his leg brushed hers quite deliberately under the table she swiftly kicked him in the shin. When Simone asked Melanie about how she had been, Melanie proudly mentioned that she'd been dating Tripp and, when asked to go into detail and show her half-sisters pictures, they made a few teasing comments wondering how Melanie had managed to snag such a handsome and eligible man. Her step-father made a fleeting comment about not knowing she was interested in older men before leering at her just long enough to make Melanie uncomfortable and cause Simone to refill her wine glass.
It wasn't until later on that night when she was on her way back from the rest room that Libby's boyfriend effectively cornered her in the hallway. Suddenly grateful for her penchant for collecting hobbies, which included a few kickboxing and self-defense courses, she bent his arm in a way that arms weren't meant to bend and effectively warned him away from her. Of course, when the story was retold moments later to Libby, Melanie was painted as the one making a pass at him.
So Melanie quickly packed her carry-on once again and called a car to take her back to the airport less than twenty four hours after arriving, charging a last minute flight back to JFK.
