If James Benson had sat down and counted the number of times that he had reiterated, not only to himself, but to AJ that he was only inviting her to spend Valentine's Day with him as a friend, he probably would have been embarrassed by the number that he uncovered. And if he was being entirely honest, he wasn't sure that the statement was even true. He hadn't planned on kissing her on New Year's Eve and he knew how that had turned out. Actually, he realized, it had turned out a lot worse than he had anticipated.
Somehow he had gotten it into his head that it had just been them at the party. Sitting with her and talking about everything from wrestling and graphic novels to their families and themselves had lulled him into a false sense of security where he thought that it didn't matter what he said to her or what he did with her. The reality of the situation was that wasn't true at all. First it had been the way that Will Blye had suddenly seemed so interested in a girl who was a little outside of his normal type, and Jamie's desire to save AJ from whatever impure intentions that Will had. But then it had been Kensi's involvement that had really put everything over the top. Just spending time with AJ at all that night had caused a violent reaction from Kensi and had ultimately caused a spiral of unfortunate events to unwind. Events that had eventually led him to speak with his sister about what his options were to keep AJ out of it and hopefully reduce the chance of her getting hurt.
Knowing Melanie's typical choice of methods, he had hoped that he never would have to use them, though she had brought up a good point. The best way to avoid all of the drama that could have unfolded by AJ's continued involvement with Will was to simply beat the other boy to the punch. Something that Jamie was more than happy to do.
He knew that when it all boiled down to it, his feelings for AJ were what really separated the two boys. Jamie was only getting involved because he wanted to keep AJ out of it. Will's involvement was something else entirely, he was sure.
With all of that in mind, Jamie had figured that the best way to handle the situation was to make sure that AJ had plans for Valentine's Day and therefore wasn't susceptible to whatever other plans people might have had. Thankfully a new superhero movie had hit the movie theaters, a superhero that he and AJ had once spoken about at length during one of the times they had gotten together - as friends. It provided him with the perfect opportunity to make one last attempt at swaying her toward being with him instead of anyone else.
They had arranged to meet at the movie theater, making it seem even less date-like he admitted, and so he waited for her outside of the building, wondering how much he trusted himself to actually keep his hands to himself that night.
