Christmas was typically Amber's favorite holiday. It allowed her to combine things that she was really good at - like shopping for gifts, decorating, and baking. She found it festive and fun and, as a girl, had spent her holidays bouncing back and forth between the homes of friends, watching awestruck at how their families celebrated in a way her own never did. Now that she was pregnant, she was hoping to start some new family traditions of her own. And while Thanksgiving had been a flop, and Brandon wasn't the most...jolly, she was still optimistic and making plans about the whole thing now that she had over a year to plan.
However, a wrench in her good mood had been the moment she'd tried on her dress for the holiday party at Finn Industries and it hadn't fit. Momentarily feeling all of the concerns her fifteen year old self had felt when her mother harped on her about her weight, she forced herself to remember that it was normal and healthy for the baby for her to be gradually putting on some weight. It didn't mean she liked it though. She hadn't said anything about it, because really she sort of knew it was a situation her boyfriend wouldn't be able to fix (and possibly would make worse). So she plastered on a smile and stood at Brandon's side, her hand in his as she greeted familiar faces and people she'd never met before in her entire life.
It was a lot to stomach when she found herself face to face with any of the Board members. The idea of having to get a paternity test just to prove a point still smarted quite a bit, it wasn't something that she was a fan of but she knew that keeping things in order at Finn Industries was a priority for Brandon, so she had agreed to make it a priority for her. However, given that it was one of their first social outings since that famed night with Eliot Quinn, she grinned at him before leaning over the bar and asking for a water. "Remember, Fists of Fury, you have to stay cool tonight. Or else Santa won't bring you anything this year," she teased.

When he considered everything that had happened since Amber had come back into his life, Brandon realized that there had still be a lot of things in their lives that they hadn't done before. Spending holidays together had been added to that list because for some reason, approaching it from the standpoint of being adults, let alone being together again, brought a whole new layer to it. On top of everything else, there was the fact that they were less than a year away from having a family of their own at the holidays. That in itself kept bringing on dozens of changes that he hadn't been expecting. There was only so much that he could do to prepare for the actual addition of a child to their family, but it was everything else that came with it that was making him realize how much he hadn't been ready for. It wasn't until Eliot had exposed them at the last charity function that had really started the onslaught of changes. Not only was it now in the open but now the Board of Directors for the company were expecting a paternity test to prove that there wasn't anything scandalous going on without their knowledge. He kept blaming himself for the latter part, considering the fact that he hadn't figured out whether or not he was ready to propose to Amber, let alone be married to her. There was no doubt in his mind that they were going to spend the rest of their lives together, he just wasn't sure that he was at the point where he felt that he needed a piece of paper to tell him that they would be.
But the Board of Directors still needed to see a piece of paper legitimizing the whole thing, as ridiculous as he seemed to think it was. He appreciated that even in spite of their fight over it, Amber had been pretty understanding about the whole thing. The last thing that he wanted was to let work come between his personal life, or his personal life cause issues with his career. It was quickly becoming very messy, he knew. But, he knew that as long as he and Amber kept working together then they could make it through whatever drama started around them. He smiled at Amber, "I'll try and keep myself from hitting anything tonight, I promise. You look beautiful, by the way," he added.

Amber smiled softly at Brandon, shaking her head at him. "You always say that," she replied to his compliment, shaking her head at him. While she never saw herself quite the way that Brandon saw him, it just happened that tonight she didn't really agree with him at all. She leaned up, pressing a soft kiss to his lips. "You clean up nice too," she quipped with a soft laugh. She sipped her water and glanced around the party. "So, if you wanted to you could fire everyone here. That's pretty sexy," she joked.
Riley hadn't really even been sure about attending the Finn Industries holiday party. She'd also been invited to the party for the rest of her clients and while she thought that she would stop by Cooper's to see Maddy, it was much more socializing than she liked to do. But Brandon was her first client and also, oddly enough, one of her good friends now. And so she'd agreed to stop by and celebrate. Adam had been a good sport about agreeing to attend. "Have I mentioned I owe you for coming tonight?" she told him. "And that you're handsome?" she added with a grin. Spotting Brandon, she chewed on her lip. "I wonder on a scale of 1-10 how much Amber dislikes me right now," she wondered out loud, turning to Adam. "I told Brandon that I recommended they have a paternity test to appease the Board of Directors. If I were her, it'd be an 11," she admitted. She spotted one of the young girls she'd hired to be her in-house liason for her work with Finn Industries, waving at her from across the room. She seemed frazzled, but Riley chose to ignore that for the time being.

Brandon smiled at her and nodded, the fact that he was running Finn Industries never ceased to surprise him. It was one of those things where he had built this expectation of what it was going to be like when it happened, but it still hadn't seemed to fully sink in. It seemed like he had spent so much time getting ready for it that it didn't really hold much effect once it was all said and done. Truthfully, he hadn't given it much thought since taking on the added responsibilities, but hearing Amber say something about it out loud had he realized that she was absolutely right. Admittedly he kind of liked the idea of it. But, he was reminded quickly, there weren't always positives to the role and he wondered vaguely if he should apologize again to Amber for the paternity test that the company was suggesting that he have her take. Instead, he decided to take a different tactic, "Thank you for coming with me, I really appreciate it."
Adam hadn't necessarily wanted to come to the Finn Industries holiday party, in fact, had he not known that he was sure part of Riley actually wanted to go, he might have fought it. He smiled at Riley and nodded, "If you're trying to flatter me into submission on this - it's working," he teased. So far he really hadn't had as much of a problem with it as he had expected, actually it had really been kind of nice. Though, admittedly, he hadn't really had to spend any time with Brandon Finn or Amber Jacobs yet, so he was sure that things still had a chance to change.

Amber nodded at Brandon. "Of course, Brandon," she replied before taking another sip of her drink. In all honesty, if he hadn't stepped into his father's role, she would have asked him to stay home with her or pretended to be sick. She knew that, even though she didn't want to necessarily go through with the paternity test, that the rumor mill in Manhattan still ran rampant. She didn't want Brandon's reputation to suffer at his own company because of her.
Riley smiled softly at her fiance and shook her head, "Into submission? Nah, I'm just hoping to get lucky on date night," she joked, smirking at him slightly before she saw her employee from a moment ago, Sara, approaching her. "Uh-oh."
"I'm really sorry to bother you," the young woman said before handing her a slip of paper, she offered Adam a small nod of greeting. "It's just that...well, I thought you'd want to see this."
Frowning, Riley glanced at the information on the paper and her brow furrowed. She cursed softly under her breath before looking up at Adam. "I love you," she began. "But something is happening, and I think I have to work," she winced and frowned at him. "I'm sorry." Turning back to Sara, she frowned, "Go pull me everything you have on these names, they're all familiar to me and I don't know why."

Adam laughed at the idea that she wanted to get lucky on date night. He certainly had no complaints about the idea, particularly because their entire lives seemed to have been taken over by wedding planning. With less than six months remaining, things were starting to become a lot more real and he was actually excited by the idea that this time next year, Riley would be his wife. He would have made a coy remark to her in response but he hesitated when one of Riley's employees approached her. Sighing softly, he frowned at his fiancee. Riley had been doing so well in her career and he was so proud of her for everything that she had accomplished, but sometimes her inability to turn off the switch and spend more time present in their relationship made him frustrated.
He tried to nod understandingly at her, though he wanted to tell her not to go. He wanted her to have more of a work-life balance but he didn't think that now was the best time to start that argument with her. "Do you think it's going to take long?"

She looked up from the piece of paper. "A few months ago, I noticed something weird was going on a couple of months ago when Cooper got me my Bloomberg Terminal. Stock prices for Finn Industries keeps going up, but lately they've been performing normally or even sometimes below projected earnings, which is normal - it happens when there are regime changes in a company. But the stock price should go down. And now I think I know why..." she trailed off for a moment and then held the piece of paper out. "Are these all clients of your firm?" she asked him, turning to Sara. "Get Brandon Finn. Now." she instructed, watching the girl scamper off to do so.
She looked apologetically at Adam. "I'm sorry. But I think that this is going to take a while. It's bad. If it wasn't bad, I would ignore it. I mean that," she told him and frowned. "I'll make it up to you," she promised.

Adam tried to be understanding about what she was expressing, and while he completely understood why it was a big deal and he knew that she needed to take care of it, and part of him was perhaps even a little less upset about it considering the fact that they were at a Finn Industries party. He supposed that he was even more understanding of it since she had, in some way, asked him to play a small part of it. Though he didn't think it made up for the fact that it was continuously difficult for them to seemingly have a life together, away from either of their careers. He looked down at the paper in his hands and nodded, "They are, I think all of them are Eliot's clients too."
He sighed softly, "It seems like you might be wracking up quite a few IOUs, Riley. We might just have to make it really good," he smiled softly at her, trying to let her know that he wasn't mad at her in the moment.
Brandon had been about to offer to get another drink, non-alcoholic of course, for Amber when he was interrupted by an employee of Riley's. She seemed more frazzled than he would have expected given their current surroundings and so he frowned before turning to his girlfriend. "I'm really sorry," he said to her, "Hopefully it'll just be something really quick. Let's just go over there and I'll let her know that whatever it is, it can be handled on Monday morning." He took her hand and squeezed it softly before leading her over to Riley. "Riley, can this wait until we're back at work?"

Amber plastered on a smile, though she was pretty sure her face was going to crack. She still wasn't particularly pleased that Riley's recommendation was a real driving force in why she needed to have the test. But she stayed silent, stood beside Brandon, her hand still in his. She ran her thumb gently over his knuckles and sipped her water, hoping to get this over with.
Riley smiled softly at Adam, kissing him gently before turning to Brandon. "It really can't. I know why our stock prices are going up. I know who's been buying them up - little by little. You don't think anything of it first because it's almost like the take-a-penny/leave-a-penny tray in a bodega. It's just there, but people hate change so they start leaving quarters in it and by the end of the lunch rush, you end up with two dollars in change inside of it." She was rambling and frowned. "Stock prices should have gone down when you took over - that's just how it works, they didn't, they went up. I wish I could say that the stock exchange just had a surge of confidence in your leadership skills Brandon, but that's not what it is. Three members of your Board of Directors, two of whom are close to retiring if rumors are indicative of everything. Separately, it's nothing, but if the last one buys out the other - Brandon, it become 5% short of a controlling interest in the company. And I'd bet you if we looked into it, Eliot Quinn owns at least 5%'s worth, because these are all his clients and those old white men in that Board Room are not this clever."

Listening to Riley explain the information that she had uncovered about his company and its stock, he was sure that he could piece together who was behind it even before she said Eliot Quinn's name. It made sense that if someone was going to try and take a controlling interest it wasn't going to be a room full of men who had spent decades working with his father and forming their own vested interests in the company. Besides, he doubted that they were necessarily the cunning type and this move was just beyond what he would have expected from the Board. Regardless of who was responsible for it, it was a much bigger deal than what he had expected when Riley's employee had come to find him. He sighed softly and turned to Amber, "I'm so sorry, but we should really take care of this before it gets any worse. This might take a while to sort out, but I promise to be back as soon as I can." He kissed her quickly before turning to Riley. "We should be able to find some place to discuss this for a while." He figured there had to be a conference room somewhere that they could use as a temporary office before being able to make it back to the office.

Amber wasn't stupid, really. She'd taken business classes, she read the papers, she knew that what Riley was saying was serious and could be a huge problem for Brandon. She chewed on her lip and just nodded at Brandon. Part of her wanted to go home. She knew that this was going to take a while - and it wasn't even going to be resolved in one night. She knew that this meant some longer hours at the office - which she didn't know was possible.
He walked away and Amber was left standing there with Adam, in a room full of people that she didn't largely know very well - some of whom didn't like her, a hand full of whom were hoping that her baby wasn't Brandon's.
Behind her, she overhead a group of women talking.
'...got his secretary fired...'
'...might not even be his baby...'
'...married some old guy for his money...'
Amber winced a bit, taking a long sip from her water, she contemplated finding wherever Brandon had just gone off to and telling him she wasn't feeling well and she'd see him at home, but decided to stick it out for a bit longer.

Perhaps the worst part of Riley's habit to leave him behind to take care of work was the fact that he always had to watch her go. And part of him particularly hated watching her walk off with Brandon Finn. That was one friendship of hers that he wasn't sure he was ever going to understand, or care for very much. As much as he knew that he was well past the point where he should have learned to stomach their friendship and keep the past in the past, he was having a hard time wrapping his mind around the idea that he could ever become friendly with Brandon in the way that Riley had. For starters, he didn't actually like the man and he thought that might have been a prerequisite for actually being nice to him.
Taking a drink from his glass he looked over at Amber briefly. All things considered she should have been the one that he was truly angry with, but he couldn't help but actually feel bad for her. Sometimes it seemed like the city was much smaller than it looked, and with the recent events that had occurred, he couldn't help but have heard some of the things that people were saying about her behind her back. Having experienced first-hand how trying the gossip of the city could be. Things hadn't necessarily been easy after Riley had ended her previous engagement and found herself in a relationship with him.
Adam cleared his throat softly, "It gets better," he advised. "The gossip, I mean. It dies down pretty quickly once they find something new to talk about. But I'm sure you already know all about that."

Amber looked up at Adam and ticked her eyebrow up. "Yeah, I'm pretty used to it," she told him. "You don't have to be nice, you know. I don't deserve it. For every horrible untrue thing they say about me, they only say them because there are a thousand horrible truths about me that make them believable. You know that." She swirled her water around and shrugged. "I just thought some things had changed," she admitted, unsure why she was suddenly talking to much to Adam. "I've changed, believe it or not. I'd like to think it's for the better. But not enough. And my kid and my boyfriend are going to be the ones that pay for it." She chuckled dryly. "I'm sorry, I have no idea why I said that."
Her brows knit together and she pursed her lips, shaking her head gently.

Adam shrugged off her apology. He understood, and while it wasn't that things had gotten to this point with himself and Riley in terms of the gossip, he knew what it was like to have a woman that he cared very much for be so upset over something that she couldn't control. Having Riley's mom come back into her life, in whatever capacity it was, had been very trying for her and he hated to see her upset over it. And if Brandon Finn truly cared about Amber, which he had to admit seemed like it was highly likely, then Adam was sure that he didn't like seeing her upset either. "You have changed," he admitted before adding, "And I do think that it's for the better. I think we've all probably changed for the better. There at least seems to be a lot less of the same sort of drama that we used to have." If he thought about it, all of the drama seemed to come back to the same source, and it was one that they hadn't even known growing up. Perhaps despite the fact that they had all grown, they were just magnets for these sorts of things.
"I don't know if it helps at all, but not everyone believes all of that stuff about you." He didn't know why he said it, whether he was trying to comfort her or not, but it was true. At one point in his life he thought he had known Amber well enough to know that she wouldn't have married her former husband for money, let alone would she had slept with someone else while she was with Brandon. That last part he felt pretty confident in, having at least seen one form of their relationship first-hand.

Amber couldn't hide the look of surprise on her face when he tried to reassure her that things weren't so bad. She smiled softly at him and nodded, "Thank you, Adam. That means a lot," she told him. Frowning, she shrugged a shoulder up. "It's just been a bit rough lately," she admitted. "I'm proud of Brandon, you know? He's worked really hard to get ready to take over for his father and I know he wants to do well. So I try not to bother him with silly things like...a stupid test and what people are saying and getting ready to have a baby." she shrugged. "I don't know, it's all stupid." she waved her hand dismissively and smiled at him, however forced it was.
"How's the wedding planning going?" She would never admit it, but she was a bit envious - not of Riley marrying Adam. But how effortlessly the decision to get married seemed to have come for them. Under no circumstances had she wanted Brandon to propose just because she was pregnant, but sometimes she wondered how far away 'someday' was when it came to him being ready to take that step.
